The Wellbeing and Emotion across the Lifespan Lab (the “WELLab”), led by primary investigator Dr. Emily Willroth, has the ultimate goal of discovering knowledge that will improve wellbeing and health across the lifespan. They investigate how well-being changes, both in the short term from moment to moment and in the long term as people age. They apply findings from this research to examine links between well-being and meaningful health outcomes, such as mental health, chronic illness, mortality, and dementia risk.
The Behavioral, Research, and Imaging Neurogenetics (BRAIN) lab, led by primary investigator Dr. Ryan Bodgan, examines how genetic variation and environmental experience contribute to individual differences in brain function, behavior, and psychopathology. They are particularly interested in understanding how differences emerge in reward and threat processing, as well as stress responsiveness, and the role of these factors in the development of psychopathology. The BRAIN lab is also the team that assists with biological marker collections (blood draw and microbiome) for the SPAN study!
The Personality, Mental Health, and AI Lab, led by primary investigator Dr. Joshua Oltmanns, has the goal of advancing psychological science in three areas. First, they use behaviors such as language, speech, movement, and facial expressions to develop AI tools for personality and mental health assessment. Second, they examine relationships between personality and health across time and change in personality and mental health across time, including through therapy. And finally, they study how people see their own personality and mental health, how they are perceived by others, and how these perspectives differ.
The Purpose, Aging, Transitions, Health (PATH) lab, led by primary investigator Dr. Patrick Hill, focuses its work on a variety of topics related to the role of dispositional traits in promoting healthy aging through the lifespan. The lab centers its work on studying purpose, which it defines as the thing in life that guides you from one day to the next, or having direction that drives you forward. They are constantly finding new ways to investigate purpose, and learning about how it manifests differently for every person.
