The St. Louis Personality and Aging Network (SPAN) study is a longitudinal research project that originated in 2007 at Washington University in St. Louis by a multidisciplinary team of investigators. Initially designed to examine the stability and influence of personality in later life, the study has expanded to explore connections among personality traits, mental and physical health, social adjustment, and physiological markers of health. More recently, the SPAN study has introduced a multigenerational component, now including descendants of the original cohort of 1,600+ participants. This addition enables researchers to explore how traits and health outcomes may persist or evolve across generations. The SPAN study is still ongoing as a collaborative effort spanning multiple labs and teams. On this site, you can learn more about the current SPAN-related projects, the history of the study, and our research teams. If you are a current participant, please visit the "For Our Participants" tab for more information related to your involvement.
